Hearing Aid Batteries and Rechargeable Hearing Aids

Just like our phones and most of our other electronics, hearing aids need batteries in order to operate and work properly. The type of battery, however, can vary from hearing aid to hearing aid. Some hearing aids use disposable batteries similar to those found in watches, while others use rechargeable batteries. Some hearing aids have the option of using both rechargeable batteries and/or disposable ones.
The type of battery that will be used in your device is an important consideration when choosing a hearing aid. Understanding the similarities and differences between hearing aids that use disposable batteries and those that use rechargeable will be very valuable when making your decision.

Disposable Hearing Aid Batteries

In the hearing aid industry, disposable batteries are often called “button batteries” because they are very small and shaped like a button. These batteries are typically zinc-air activated. This means that the batteries work when they are exposed to the oxygen in the air. Zinc-air batteries come with a tiny sticker attached to them to keep them inactive until they are ready to be used. When the sticker is removed, air is able to interact with the zinc and begin to work to power your hearing aid. Once activated, these batteries are running continuously, regardless of whether you are wearing and using your hearing aids or not.

When choosing a hearing aid that uses disposable batteries, it is important to consider the following:

Rechargeable Hearing Aids

Hearing aids that use rechargeable batteries are becoming increasingly more common amongst the top manufacturers; however, they are still less common than aids that use traditional batteries. Rather than using disposable “button batteries”, rechargeable hearing aids use a built-in battery (most commonly (are) a lithium-ion (batteries) battery) that does not need to be regularly changed or replaced.

(Instead,) rechargeable hearing aids are recharged by being docked or “plugged in” at night while you sleep, very similarly to how you charge your cell phone or laptop. Rechargeable hearing aids are more convenient for most hearing aid wearers. However, there are plenty of reasons to choose hearing aids that use traditional batteries as well.

We understand that there are many factors to consider when choosing the right hearing aids for you, and battery type is only one of them. That is why we work with you to help you choose the hearing aids that will best fit your budget, lifestyle, preferences and hearing profile.
